PHASE 2: Literature Review

Sample good quality literature review from Purdue OWL

What is a Literature Review. It is different from an Annotated Bibliography and does more than just review what has already been written. Look at this page from the Online Writing Lab for more information.   Remember to use APA in-text citations to reference your work.

Follow these steps in the literature review process (Concordia University):

Preparation of a literature review may be divided into four steps:

  1. Define your subject and the scope of the review.
  2. Search the library catalogue, subject specific databases and other search tools to find sources that are relevant to your topic.
  3. Read and evaluate the sources and to determine their suitability to the understanding of topic at hand (see the Evaluating sources section).
  4. Analyse, interpret and discuss the findings and conclusions of the sources you selected.

A literature review is a discussion, not a list describing or summarizing one piece of literature after another. It is a bad sign to see every paragraph beginning with the name of a researcher. Instead, organize the literature review into sections that present themes or  trends.. You should aim to synthesize and evaluate information t according to guiding concept of your thesis / research question (U of T, Writing Centre )

Students will complete a five-part process that will last the duration of the HHS4U1 course.  This five-part process employs the stages of the research process and asks students to critically investigate a topic relevant to the study of the family.

PHASE 2: Literature Review

Earl Haig Library Literature Review Template

A literature review is a critical summary of what the scientific literature says about your specific topic or question. Often student research in APA fields falls into this category. Your professor might ask you to write this kind of paper to demonstrate your familiarity with work in the field pertinent to the research you hope to conduct.
